Midweek Update: June 16, 2021

Dear Faith Community Church Family,

This Sunday we come to a turning point in the book of Acts. A wave of persecution toward Christians arose in Jerusalem following the death of Stephen. Many of them fled north to Samaria, but they kept speaking about Jesus. Luke makes a point of telling us that “those who were scattered went about preaching the word.” (Acts 8:4) One of those was Philip, a deacon listed alongside Stephen in Acts 6. What we discover is that the persecution of the church led to even greater gospel growth. Jesus’ words to his disciples were coming true: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) As we will see in Acts 8:4-25, when the gospel spreads, it conquers both cultural division and spiritual darkness wherever it goes.
