Dear Faith Community Church Family,
Jesus says in John 15:5: “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” The Lord is telling his disciples that if they want to bear fruit in their lives (like the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23), they must stay connected to him.
As we have seen, the problem with the church in Laodicea in Revelation 3:14-22 was that they had allowed themselves to become disconnected from Jesus. They had abandoned, at least in practice, their Savior. He had ceased to be their source of spiritual strength and fervor. Their pride and self-reliance had taken over, and as a result they had become lukewarm, ineffective Christians. Jesus’ counsel to the Christians in Laodicea is to repent and to return to him for healing and communion. Repentance is turning away from sin and turning to Jesus for forgiveness. Repentance is a gift that always leads to a deeper relationship with our Savior.
This Sunday we will continue with the themes of repentance, communion with Jesus, and remaining faithful in the Christian life as we turn to Jesus’ words in John 15:1-11.
