Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Advent is upon us! I don’t know about you, but sometimes it seems that no matter how much our family tries to prepare for Christmas, it always catches us a little by surprise. As you probably know, the word “advent” means “coming;” it is the season in the church calendar when we prepare to celebrate the first coming of Jesus in the incarnation at Christmas and simultaneously prepare our hearts for his second coming. The Apostle Paul says that the second coming of Christ will come “like a thief in the night” in 1 Thessalonians 5:2-4. When he says this, he doesn’t mean Jesus is like a criminal; his emphasis is that Jesus’ arrival will be swift, and, in a certain sense, unexpected. The Bible makes it clear that our living Lord Jesus will physically and gloriously return to earth one day, at which point he will usher in the completion of his new creation. That time will be both a time of judgment and a time of renewal. So we are always to be ready, always to be prepared for his return.
This year, our Advent series The Coming Glory will focus on the book of Haggai, a brief but vitally important book in the Old Testament concerned with preparing God’s people for God’s presence. This Sunday we turn our attention to Haggai 1:1-15.
Please note, our fellowship time this Sunday and throughout Advent will take place before the service at 9:00am in the narthex.
Please prepare your hearts for communion this Sunday through setting aside time prior to our worship service for prayer and confession. As I shared on Sunday, beginning this week we will have an offertory following the sermon, and will pass the offering plate at this time during the service.

I ask that you pray for me and my family this week as I am traveling to Birmingham, Alabama to direct the funeral of my uncle who passed away last weekend. I will be out of town Wednesday, November 29-Saturday, December 2, but will have access to email during that time. If you have a pastoral emergency, please contact one of our elders, Larry LaBelle or Tim Wierenga.
