Midweek Update: January 17, 2024

Dear Faith Community Church Family,

The word gospel means “good news.” We saw on Sunday how the arrival of this good news was prophesied all the way back in the time of Isaiah:

Go on up to a high mountain,
O Zion, herald of good news;
lift up your voice with strength,
O Jerusalem, herald of good news;
lift it up, fear not;
say to the cities of Judah,
“Behold your God!”

(Isaiah 40:9).

This week, as we return to Mark 1:1-13, we’ll see how God had told his people that he would send a messenger to prepare them for the coming Messiah. Mark refers us back to prophecies about this messenger in Malachi 3 and in Isaiah 40. We come to realize that this prophecy is fulfilled in the arrival of John the Baptist, whose ministry is to prepare and to point. That is, his ministry is to prepare God’s people for the arrival of the Christ (the Messiah), through preaching the need for repentance and baptism. But his ministry is also to point to Jesus as the Messiah, the King and Savior of the world.

The message that we need to hear is the same as those who heard John the Baptist’s message: turn from sin and turn to the Savior! In Him alone do we find salvation.

Prayer Service and Congregational Meeting: Sunday, January 28

On January 28 we will gather for a brief service of prayer following our worship service and before our congregational meeting. Our time of prayer will focus upon praising God for his faithfulness to our congregation over the past 50 years and bringing to him in prayer our anticipations and concerns of the coming year. There will be a time following the worship service to get refreshments in the Narthex before we begin the prayer service.
