Dear Brothers and Sisters,
In this Sunday’s passage, Mark shares with us the message that Jesus was preaching as he began his public ministry: “Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel’” (Mark 1:14-15). Following the proclamation of that message (what Mark refers to as “the gospel of God”) is the story of Jesus calling his disciples to become “fishers of men.” Several of the disciples were fishermen by trade; Jesus’ call intentionally uses their pre-discipleship occupation to help them understand their new vocation. They are now being called to follow him and to do what he does: fish for men. When we become disciples of Jesus, he makes us into people who actively seek to lead others to the Master. Our sermon text for this Sunday is Mark 1:14-20.
