Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Last week, we looked together at the identity of the Messiah: the Davidic king. This Sunday, we’ll examine the function of the Messiah. Now that we know who he is, we need to understand what he does. God’s people had been anticipating the Messiah for generations; they were hoping for a man, chosen by God, who would once and for all destroy Israel’s enemies and establish an eternal, unshakeable kingdom of peace. Peter rightly recognizes that Jesus is the Chosen One: God’s Messiah. But Jesus asks him and the disciples to tell no one. Why? Because he knew there was a disconnect between their expectations of what the Messiah would do and God’s plan for the Messiah. He needed to adjust their vision of how the King would bring victory: namely, through suffering. Our text for this Sunday is Mark 8:31-38.
